Display Settings

The website is set up for best viewing with your resolution set to 800X600, and your color palette set to High Color or greater.Font size should be set to small.

If you are set to a higher resolution (1024x768) the website will expand to fill your web browser. You may get better results at this setting with the fonts set to Large, unless you are using a large (19" or greater) monitor.

If your colors are set to 256 colors, you will see distortion and a black and white effect in the color photos on the site. Otherwise, it should work fine.

We have tried to accommodate users with a 640x480 resolution, but the website will run off the edge of your web browser at this resolution. You can still use the website, but you may need to use the scroll bars to view all the pages and menus.

Web Browser Settings

The website is fully tested with Netscape Navigator/Communicator, version 7.0 and up and with Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE), version 5.0 and up. It ha also been tested with Opera, Firefox, and with MacIntosh Safari and IE5 for Mac.

Due to changes in web technology and webauthoring standards, it is becoming more difficult to provide pages which function well with older browsers. For this reason, we recommend you upgrade to either Netscape 7.1 or Internet Explorer 6, or some other compatible browser, if you are using version 4 or earlier of either browser.

If you are using a browser which is having difficulty using our site, please let us know, and we will be happy to look into it. (webmaster@peoriaaz.gov)

Whichever browser you are using, be sure to activate settings for Java and JavaScript.( These are usually already activated by default in Communicator and Explorer.) Our site's navigation menus make extensive use of Java Applets and JavaScript. If you have an older computer (386-486) or WEBTV, you may not be able to see the Java/Javascript menus. Use the link labeled NON-JAVA MENU.

Please note that newer versions of Internet Explorer may not have the Java Virtual machine (JVM) installed. You may need to download it from Sun Microsystems, the owner of Java. Click here to get it.

Our site also makes extensive use of frames. The top and side frames stay in place, with their menus, as you travel through the website. The content you select on these menus appears in the main frame, the lower right portion of the web browser. If you are using Netscape, at any time you may view the main frame in a new window, by right clicking on the frame, and selecting "Open Frame in a New Window."  If your web browser or computer cannot support frames, we suggest an upgrade.

Some links, especially to other websites, will open a new window, either a smaller window on top of our pages, or in another full screen window. To close these windows, click the "X" in the upper right corner. Some of these windows open with limited navigation buttons. If you need to navigate within these windows, try a right click for a menu of controls.

If you are viewing outdated information on a page, it may be because your web browser has "cached" or stored a copy of the page, from the last time you visited the website. Be sure to regularly clear your cache (Netscape) or delete temporary internet pages. (Internet Explorer)

Both browsers have settings for when it gets a new copy of a page. Automatic, or on every visit are good choices. Consult your browser's help file.

About Acrobat Reader and PDF files.

There are many forms and other documents available for download from our website. Many of the documents are available in PDF format. This "Portable Document Format" was developed by Adobe Software to standardize documents for delivery from the Internet. It preserves images and formatting of printed pages exactly as they originally appeared.

To access these documents, Adobe provides the Acrobat Reader at no cost. You must download this software in order to access PDF files. When you install it, the program automatically installs "plug-ins" for your web browser. Once the plugins are installed, when you click on a link to download a PDF document, your browser loads the Acrobat Reader plug in, and the document loads into your browser, on our website, into the main frame. Once loaded, a number of control buttons appear at the top of the frame, which allow you to print, save, or view the document.

If you do not have Acrobat Reader installed, or if you do not have version 4.05 or greater installed, we suggest you download it for best results viewing documents on our website. Versions older than 4.05 may have difficulty displaying documents in a frame. Any time you get a blank screen while downloading, just hit RELOAD or REFRESH on your web browser.

If you are having difficulty viewing a PDF document in your web browser,  try a right click on the link, then "save target as" to download the document to your PC. Then you can open and view it with Acrobat Reader. See How To Download below.

If you need to download Acrobat Reader, Click Here.

Note for AOL users:
If you are using America Online's software, their browser apparently does not install the Acrobat Reader plug-in. AOL's browser has been noted by some users as having difficulty opening large PDF files. If you are using AOL's browser, you need to click on the link, and save the file to your hard drive on your computer. Then, later you can open the file you have saved with Acrobat Reader. See "It's Not Working..."

Other Files and Pages

How to download

If you wish to download a file to your computer, without viewing it first, you can RIGHT-click on the links( for files ) , then choose "Save Link As" (Netscape) or "Save Target As.." (IE).

This is very important with large PDF files, which may not load correctly in your webbrowser. If you are having difficulty viewing a PDF file, try saving it, by using a right click, and then open it later with the Acrobat reader software.

You can save or print any page your are viewing.

For Netscape: First click with your mouse somewhere in the frame you want to print or save. Then, go to  the File menu and choose "Save frame as" or "Print Frame ", depending on what you want to do. If you just choose Print or Save, you will access the entire Frames page, and may get little or no data.

For Internet Explorer: First click with your mouse somewhere in the frame you want to print or save. Go to  the File menu and choose "Save As", then be sure to select "Complete page" as file type. For printing, select "Print", making sure to check the dialog box that appears to select which frame you want to print out.

Sometimes, despite the best laid plans of mice and men, something goes wrong. We try to keep peoriaaz.gov updated and operating correctly, but being a two-person department, occasionally, we miss something.

If you find a link that doesn't work, a file you can't download; a missing page, a spelling or punctuation error, or just something you'd like to see done differently; or maybe even something that's not here that you'd like to see here:

Send an email to Webmaster@peoriaaz.gov.

Please include as much information as you can, including your web browser and how you access the internet. We will respond as quickly as possible, and do whatever we can to resolve any issue you may raise.
