Home Safety Checklist

 General Home Safety
   Reduce clutter - remove trip hazards
   Do not run electrical cords under carpets or rugs
   Check for loose stair hand rails
   Check for loose boards and rails on decks
   Install non-locking door handles on children's bedrooms
   Check all window locks for ease of operation
   Don't use damaged tools or appliances
   Turn off water heater before turning off water to your home
   Replace water heater relief valve each year
   Set water heater to no higher than 120 degrees
   Install outlet covers over unused receptacles
   Install outdoor lighting at each home entrance
   Keep ammunition & firearms locked up or install trigger guards
 Fire Safety
   Place smoke detectors in Kitchen, stairways and hallways
   Test smoke detectors monthly
   Replace smoke detector batteries every six months
   Install a fire extinguisher in the kitchen
   Know how to quickly turn off all electrical power to your home
   Have chimney cleaned every year
   Never drape anything across a lamp shade or light fixture
   Don't use frayed electrical cords
   Plan and practice a home fire drill twice a year
   Store flammable liquids in approved containers
   Keep all matches and lighters away from where kids can get them
   Never burn boxes or waste paper in your fireplace 
   Use a fireplace spark screen or glass enclosure
   Keep outdoor grills at least 10 feet away from your house
   Immediately dispose of rags used with flammable liquids, grease, paint, stain -  place them in a trash receptacle away from your house
    Don't store open containers of flammable liquids
    Keep flammable material away from electrical & gas appliances
 Kitchen Safety
   Keep small children away from stoves and ovens
   Use back burners for pots with long handles to prevent kids from reaching up to them
   Never leave stove, oven, hotplates or cookers on when you are away from home
   Store harmful & poisonous household chemicals in the original containers and above the reach of children
 Basements, Sheds and Garages
   Store harmful chemicals and fuels above the reach of children
   Never let small children play unsupervised in basements, sheds or garages
   Lock up all poser tool - remove the keys from bench tools
   Eliminate clutter and trip hazards
   Routinely check for harmful insect & nests
 Bathrooms
   Remove all harmful substances and medicines
   Provide non-slip surfaces in tubs & showers
   Install Ground Fault Interrupt electrical outlets
