The Criminal Investigations Section (CIS) is comprised of two separate units:
Major Crimes Unit
Special Victims Unit
Each Unit is tasked with specific assignments and investigations within their field of expertise.
As a Section, CIS is responsible for all follow-up investigations involving criminal activity, which occurs within the city of Peoria. The Section is also tasked with covert drug operations, surveillance and intelligence gathering.
Major Crimes Unit
The Major Crimes Unit (MCU) is primarily tasked with the follow-up investigation of homicides, robbery, assaults, arson, incidents of serious injury and death, major fraud and missing persons. The complexity of serious felony crimes and high liability requires an extensive amount of investigation and scene processing.
Special Victims Unit
The Special Victims Unit (SVU) is tasked with follow-up investigation of Domestic Violence Crimes, Crimes Against Children, and Sex Crimes. These types of crimes are complex in nature and require extensive investigation by specially-trained detectives.
SVU works closely with Childhelp USA and Child Protective Services (CPS) in the protection of Peoria’s children. SVU is responsible for the tracking and community notification of registered sex offenders living in Peoria, utilizing Offender Watch. This program can be accessed through the City’s website. SVU employs a Victim’s Assistance Coordinator who oversees specially-trained volunteer advocates. SVU also takes a proactive approach to Domestic Violence, with the creation of Domestic Violence Warrant Round-Ups.
