Senior Transit Dispatcher



GENERAL PURPOSE
This position is responsible for developing daily routing for Transit Drivers and along with other dispatch staff, act as an interface between the Transit Section and customers of the services that Transit provides.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This position receives general supervision from the Transit Supervisor. Exercises supervision over Transit staff.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
• Provides general supervision and assistance to dispatch personnel
• Assists Supervisor in developing performance evaluations for Transit staff
• Receives telephone calls from the public, and other agencies
• Dispatches appropriate employees and buses
• Operates base radio unit to communicate with other members of the Transit section
• Accepts, investigates and resolves customer requests and complaints and determines appropriate actions
• Provides information to customers of the Transit section
• Prepares bus routing daily according to established priority criteria
• Operates and oversee a computerized route-scheduling system
• Maintains status board showing current vehicle activity of all transit vehicles
• Prepares and maintains records and monthly statistical and narrative reports relating to Transit division activities
• Performs time keeping functions; prepares daily revenue collection reports and prepares revenue for deposit
• Attends meetings as assigned by the Transit Supervisor or in the absence of the Supervisor
• Performs typing, filing, record keeping, and other duties as determined by the Transit Supervisor
• Performs the duties of a Driver as required
• Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, streamline work processes and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma/GED equivalent and three years of administrative experience in transit system operations, which includes two years dispatching and/or supervision of drivers. This classification requires the use of City vehicles on City business. Individuals must by physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals are required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license; Arizona Commercial driver's license with a “P” endorsement. Pre-employment drug testing is required, and employees will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. An equivalent combination of experience and education that meet the required qualifications may be substituted.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Prior experience in dispatch or other communications; knowledge of operations, services, policies, traffic laws, ordinances, rules, defensive driving techniques and driving courtesies. Good understanding of operational characteristics of computers and dispatch equipment.
