Senior Mechanic
JOB OBJECTIVES
Responsible for major mechanical repairs
to automotive, diesel, and other power-driven heavy
equipment; maintains and services complex pieces of
equipment. Assigns tasks and monitors work of Mechanics
and Assistant Mechanics.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the advanced journey level class
in the Mechanic series. Positions at this level are
distinguished from other classes within the series by
the complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform
the most difficult and responsible types of duties
assigned to classes within this series, including
working on diesel equipment and vehicles and providing
lead supervision on occasion. Employees at this level
are required to be fully trained in all procedures
related to assigned area of responsibility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the
Fire Physical Resource Supervisor. Primary supervision
is received from the Fire Physical Resource Supervisor.
May exercise technical and functional supervision over
Mechanics.
ESSENTIAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as

Inspects, diagnoses, and locates complex
mechanical difficulties in City Automobiles, trucks, and
a variety of diesel and gasoline-powered maintenance and
construction equipment
·
Determines extent of necessary repairs;
estimate the cost and time for repairs; replaces and
repairs faulty or damaged parts; determines repairs
beyond the shop capabilities
·
Overhauls, repairs, and adjusts engines,
transmissions, differentials, and clutches on heavy and
diesel equipment
·
Replaces or repairs faulty parts,
including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock
absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and
related parts and equipment
·
Repairs and replaces such components as
generators, distributors, relays, lights, and switches
·
Maintains work, time, and material
records
·
Performs difficult manual labor,
including lifting heavy weights, stooping, bending, and
twisting
·
Performs tune-up and emission testing as
required
·
Assists lower level mechanics in the
performance of major mechanical repairs as assigned
·
Maintains shop cleanliness; repairs shop
equipment as necessary
·
Cleans vehicles and equipment
·
Tunes up engines, replaces ignition
parts, and cleans and adjusts carburetors
·
Manages teams utilizing consultative
decision-making
·
Perform related duties, as assigned
REQUIRED
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or
GED and three years specialized training in the repair
and maintenance of pumps, valves, and fire apparatus.
Five years of experience performing skilled mechanic
work in the servicing and repair of automobiles and
heavy equipment. 4 ASE cert’s or 4 EVT cert’s, or 10
years of heavy ( Fire ) truck repair experience.
DESIRED
QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a recognized automotive/diesel truck trade
school. ASE Master Certification or a combination of 10
ASE Certificates (Automotive/Heavy Truck). Arizona
Emission license.
Additional specialized
training and experience in vehicle/equipment maintenance
and repair with emphasis on fire apparatus, equipment
operation and repair, and aerial apparatus;
valid air-conditioning
license for automotive air-conditioning work/repair or
ability to obtain within 12 months of hire date;
Knowledge of the tools,
equipment, and procedures used in the overhaul, repair,
and adjustments of diesel, gas-powered equipment and
allison transmissions; Operation and care of electrical,
hydraulic, and fire pump systems; Safe work practices.
Experience in supervising other mechanics and the
efficient documentation/tracking of work/projects,
hours, and inventory.
OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS
Arizona Commercial Drivers License Class A or B within
six months of hire. ASE Master Certification or a
combination of 10 ASE Certificates (Automotive/Heavy
Truck) within one year of hire. Arizona Emission License
within one year from date of hire.

Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees may
exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up
to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds
of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to
remain in a standing position for extended periods of
time. Lift arms above shoulder level to install and
remove overhead components. Bend or stoop repeatedly
over time to check air pressure in tires and other
tasks. Manipulate tools in the areas of limited space.
Works safely without presenting direct threat to self
and others.

Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees
regularly are required to use oral and written
communication skills; read and interpret data,
information and documents; analyze and solve problems;
interact with the general public, vendors, public
agencies, employees and others who may be encountered
during the course of work.
