Park Ranger
GENERAL PURPOSE
Enforce regulations, reservations and ordinances; provides
timely, professional, and courteous customer service
assistance and information to park visitors, and promotes
park and trail safety.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive direction from the Park Ranger Supervisor and/or
Parks Manager. Exercise no supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations
of the various types of work that may be performed. The
omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude
them from the position if the work is similar, related or a
logical assignment to this class.
Patrols parks and trails to observe conditions,
anticipates, and corrects problems or notify appropriate
personnel
Conducts building and equipment safety checks at
facilities and playgrounds
Ensures compliance with City park and trail rules and
regulations
Offers courteous and friendly directions, information or
interpretation of rules and regulations in order to gain
voluntary compliance
Exercises judgment and independent action in exercising
patrol functions within legal and departmental constraints,
deters criminal and other undesirable activity
Submits ideas and suggestions relevant to improving park
maintenance and future park planning
Opens and closes park and trail facilities ensuring
facilities are secure as appropriate
Ensures reserved facilities are available as scheduled in
a safe, clean condition
Checks for permits and turns park lights on and off as
needed
Prepares departmental reports for injuries, vandalism,
thefts, incidents and patrol time
Promotes park and trail cleanliness, checks and monitors
restrooms and playground facilities
Provides assistance in emergency situations; calls for
police or medical assistance
Assists with park and/or recreation programs and special
events
Cites misdemeanor and civil offenses for violation of
chapter 18 of City Ordinances, Parks and Recreation
Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing
Understands and follows oral and written instructions
Perform outdoor maintenance duties
Performs related duties as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or equivalent and one year of experience
in public recreation, security or a related field;
Possession of a valid Arizona drivers license; Basic Life
Support (CPR/AED) and First Aid certification. Must
satisfactorily complete a background check and polygraph
examination.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of local city parks, facilities and locations;
City ordinances and state statutes for park use. Completion
of a mountain bike cyclist course; extensive knowledge of
park safety practices; patrol and security procedures and
practices.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
required to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally,
and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20
pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees
regularly are required to use oral communication skills;
read and interpret data, analyze and solve problems;
interact with the general public, public agencies, employees
and others who may be encountered during the course of work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are
representative of those an employee encounters while
performing the essential functions of this class. Reasonable

Position is subject to outside environmental conditions: No
effective protection from weather. Position may be subject
to extreme heat or cold for periods of more than one hour.
Extensive walking and bicycle patrol of City parks and
trails. May occasionally encounter hostile or irate persons.
