Firefighter Recruit
GENERAL PURPOSE
Participates in fire drills and learns all aspects of fire
suppression, prevention, and emergency medical support;
responds to fire alarms with assigned fire fighting
personnel in a training capacity; and, assists in other fire
fighting activities as assigned including prevention,
inspection, and equipment maintenance and repair.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive immediate supervision from a Fire Captain. Exercise
no supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations
of the various types of work that may be performed. The

them from the position if the work is similar, related or a
logical assignment to this class.
Learns operations of the Fire Department through
observation and participating in a wide variety of fire
suppression, prevention, and support activities; serves in a
training capacity while attending the Fire Academy
Participates in the fire drills; learns hands-on hose
evolutions, pump operations, ladder operations, hydrant
maintenance, air pack maintenance, and related tasks
Responds to fire alarms with assigned fire fighting
personnel; observes and assists, as appropriate, in fire
response activities, including connecting and laying hose
operating nozzles, and lowering and adjusting ladders
Learns to apply fire fighting techniques and procedures
Learns to administer first aid as necessary
Assists in overhauling, salvage, and clean up operations
Learns to operate motor driven equipment and related
apparatus
Learns to and assists in cleaning and servicing fire
fighting and emergency medical equipment
Thinks and acts quickly in emergencies and judges
situations and people accurately
Learns standard broadcasting procedures of a dispatch
radio system
Performs related duties, as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or equivalent and knowledge of the basic
function of a fire department. Possession of a valid EMT
certificate. Possession of an appropriate, valid Arizona
driver's license. Ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid
Fire Fighters Certificate. Ability to obtain, an
appropriate Arizona Hazardous Materials First Responder
certificate. Must meet the physical requirements necessary
to safely and effectively perform assigned duties.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
National Registry or State of Arizona Paramedic
certification, Firefighter I & II certificates. Extensive
knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of
modern fire fighting; fire apparatus, equipment, tools,
devices, facilities, and their proper use and maintenance
requirements.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this class, employees
regularly are required to sit; talk or hear, in person and
by telephone, use hands repetitively to handle, feel or
operate equipment; and reach with hands and arms. Employees
are required to walk, stoop, climb, stand and exerting in
excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess
of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20
pounds of force constantly to move objects. Specific vision
abilities required by this job include close vision, use of
both eyes, ability to adjust focus and to distinguish basic
colors and/or shades.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of the this class, employees
regularly are required to use oral communication skills;
read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze
and solve problems; interact with the general public,
contractors, engineers, public agencies, employees , and
others who may be encountered during the course of work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are

performing the essential functions of this class. Reasonable

The employee spends substantial time in the field and is
subject to outside environmental conditions: No effective
protection from weather. Position may be subject to extreme
heat or cold for periods of more than one hour. Position is
subject to hazards: Proximity to moving mechanical parts,
electrical current, exposure to chemicals, etc. Position is
subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes, odors, dusts,
mists, gases, or poor ventilation. Position is required to
wear respirator to complete a portion of its position
accountabilities.
