Firefighter
GENERAL PURPOSE
Respond to fire alarms and other emergency calls to protect
life and property; and, participate in fire prevention,
training activities, and station and equipment maintenance.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive general supervision from a Fire Captain. Exercise no
supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations
of the various types of work that may be performed. The
omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude
them from the position if the work is similar, related or a
logical assignment to this class.
• Responds to alarms with the fire company; connects and lay
hose lines; enters burning areas or buildings with hose
lines; assists in operating nozzles and directing a stream
of water on fires; carries and operates chemical fire
extinguishers; raises, lowers, and climbs ladders; makes
forcible entry into building when necessary; analyzes fire
and emergency situations and adopt effective courses of
action and retains presence of mind in emergency situations
• Administers first aid; assists in rescue operations. As
directed, ventilates buildings; assists in overhauling,
salvage, and clean up operations
• Cleans and services fire fighting and emergency medical
equipment; inspects and tests equipment carried on fire
trucks
• Studies Fire Department rules and regulations, fire
hazards, and fire fighting techniques; attends drills and
staff training activities
• Maintains awareness of City geography and the water system
• May perform paramedic duties as required; administers
advanced life support procedures to persons suffering
medical emergencies; checks and maintains medical equipment
and drug supplies
• May operate motor driven equipment, including fire trucks,
automobiles and rescue and supply trucks
• Assists paramedics at medical emergencies; applies
techniques for the control of bleeding; utilizes
immobilization techniques to stabilize patient
• Assists in the maintenance of clean and orderly conditions
in and about fire station
• Serves on special duty at public gatherings
• Participates in fire inspections and other fire prevention
activities
• Gives demonstrations, classes, and training to the public
• Investigates causes of fire
• Serves as Fire Engineer as necessary
• Understands and acts in accordance with departmental
policies, rules, instructions, and written material in the
field of fire fighting
• Operates a variety of fire fighting equipment
• Demonstrates physical aptitude as required
• Operates and maintain voice radio equipment
• Performs related duties, as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or equivalent, supplemented by college
level courses in fire science, fire administration, or a
related field. Possession of an appropriate certificate of
completion from the Firefighter Recruit Academy. Possession
of a State of Arizona Firefighter II Certificate. Possession
of a valid EMT certificate. Possession of, or ability to
obtain, an appropriate valid Hazardous Materials First
Responder or Hazardous Materials Technician Certificate.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid
Paramedic certificate may be required for some positions.
Possession of an appropriate, valid Arizona Class D driver's
license. Successful completion of the Firefighter Recruit
Academy.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and
procedures of modern fire fighting; fire apparatus,
equipment, tools, devices, facilities, and their proper use
and maintenance requirements.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees
regularly are required to sit; talk or hear, in person and
by telephone, use hands repetitively to handle, feel or
operate equipment; and reach with hands and arms. Employees
are required to walk, stoop, climb, stand and exerting in
excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess
of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20
pounds of force constantly to move objects. Specific vision
abilities required by this job include close vision, use of
both eyes, ability to adjust focus and to distinguish basic
colors and/or shades.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of the this class, employees
regularly are required to use oral communication skills;
read and interpret data, information and documents; analyze
and solve problems; interact with the general public,
contractors, engineers, public agencies, employees , and
others who may be encountered during the course of work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are
representative of those an employee encounters while
performing the essential functions of this class. Reasonable

The employee spends substantial time in the field and is
subject to outside environmental conditions: No effective
protection from weather. Position may be subject to extreme
heat or cold for periods of more than one hour. Position is
subject to hazards: Proximity to moving mechanical parts,
electrical current, exposure to chemicals, etc. Position is
subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes, odors, dusts,
mists, gases, or poor ventilation. Position is required to
wear respirator to complete a portion of its position
accountabilities.
