Investigator
GENERAL PURPOSE
Provides a wide variety of duties related to law enforcement
and crime prevention in support of the Police Department
Criminal Investigations Section. This position assists in
investigation of crimes and status offenses involving adults
and juveniles. Additional duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from a Police Department
supervisor. Exercises no supervision.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions assigned to this class can be distinguished from
police officer by the fact the incumbents are not AZ POST
certified, do not carry a gun, and do not make arrests.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended

• Prepares and completes detailed reports of crimes
involving persons and property.
• Analyzes intelligence information and prepares detailed
reports.
• Practices positive interaction and effective
communications with the public, co-workers, and supervisors.
• Utilizes computer system to research police reports and
track property for owners.
• Contacts and cooperates with other City departments and
other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the
investigations or other public safety concerns.
• Testifies and presents evidence in court.
• Attends meetings and responds to related questions and
complaints.
• Provides public education.
• Conducts studies of the organization and procedures of the
Department.
• Analyzes reports and records.
• Represents the Police Department and the City by serving
on committees and attending various meetings.
• Assists in coordinating police activities with other City
departments and divisions and outside agencies.
• Interacts with the public, peers, supervisor, and/or other
employees in a positive manner.
• Performs related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent supplemented with
specialized police operations course work. Two years of
general police operations experience in a public safety
related setting.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of City, County, and State laws; interviewing
techniques; principles and procedures of investigating and
processing; crime analysis; crime prevention, investigation,
and identification techniques; general police procedures.
Ability to prepare accurate and grammatically correct
written reports; interpret and apply laws and regulations of
the City, County, and State; communicate clearly and
concisely both orally and in writing; prepare written
reports and maintain efficient record keeping systems;
establish and maintain effective working relationships with
those contacted in the course of work.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees are
regularly required to sit; talk or hear, in person and by
telephone; and to reach with hands and arms, lift and climb
ladders during investigations. Employees are required to
occasionally exert up to 20 pounds of force.
Mental Demands
While performing the duties of this class, employees
regularly are required to use oral and written communication
skills; read and interpret data, information and documents;
analyze and solve problems; interact with the general
public, public agencies, employees and others who may be
encountered during the course of work.

Position is subject to environmental conditions. Activities
