Title: Accountant

 FLSA Status: Exempt

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:

The purpose of this position is to provide accounting support to the Finance Department.  This is accomplished by administering special assessments, overseeing the travel and training system, completing intermediate accounting activities, participating in the preparation of the CAFR, and reviewing expenditure reporting.  Other duties include completing related tasks as assigned.

Provides oversight and administers the travel and training system, and special assessment system by setting up assessment software, obtaining information on cash collection, debt service, and related items, processing modifications of existing assessments, processing billings, responding to requests and inquiries, processing payoffs, reviewing employee travel requests, entering information, monitoring reconciliations, and approving all reports.

Completes accounting activities by reviewing check requests and requisitions, uploading files, preparing journal entries, preparing reconciliations, and completing research.

Participates in the preparation of the CAFR by reconciling revenues and balances, preparing year end reclassification journal entries, and preparing audit schedules.

Reports expenditures by uploading bank files of card transactions, monitoring procurement transactions for timeliness, reviewing detail, uploading information to the general ledger, and participating in audits.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Formal Education

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field.  Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.

Experience

Over one year up to and including three years experience.

Supervision

Job has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others.

Human Collaboration Skills

Work may require providing advice to others outside direct reporting relationships on specific problems or general policies.  Contacts may require the consideration of different points of view to reach agreement.  Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.

Freedom to Act

The employee normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices.  The assignment is usually reviewed upon completion.

Technical Skills

Skilled: Work requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization.

Budget Responsibility

Position has moderate fiscal responsibility.  May be responsible for the billing, collection and/or accounting of funds.  May be responsible for the handling and balancing of cash. 

Reading

Advanced - Ability to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and/or legal documents.  Ordinarily, such education is obtained in at the college level or above. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.

Math

Advanced - Ability to apply fundamental concepts of theories, work with advanced mathematical operations methods, and functions of real and complex variables.  Ordinarily, such education is obtained in at the college level or above. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.

Writing

Intermediate - Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech.  Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
