Safe Routes to School Every public elementary school in the City of Peoria has a Suggested Route to School Route Plan. The purpose of a route plan is to suggest walking route for students. The suggested walking route is also used to identify any deficiencies along the routes, and is used to evaluate the need for school traffic control, such as 15mph School Crossings, and the placement of adult crossing guards and sidewalk monitors. |

The Suggested Route to School Route Plan should encourage more children to walk and ride their bikes in a safe environment, which is a healthy activity. It should also help to minimize the number of vehicles at schools during arrival and dismissal times and the traffic congestion that results. To be successful, the input and momentum needs to come from parents and school officials. The City of Peoria prepares Suggested Route to School Route Plan maps for every school within the City and ensures that maps are kept current within three years. When it is time to create or modify a route map, City staff will contact the school principal to determine if the school wishes to participate in the process. If the school does not wish to participate, City staff will prepare the map to submit to the school for review. For the best outcome, however, the process to identify recommended walking routes should be a cooperative effort among parents, school officials, and City staff.
