The Wastewater
Treatment System
The City of Peoria has one wastewater treatment facility known as the
Beardsley Road Wastewater Reclamation Facility. It is located at approximately 107th
Avenue and Beardsley Road. This facility serves the area bounded by Beardsley Road to the
south, 107th Avenue to the west, 83rd Avenue to the east, and the
City of Peoria limits to the north. The approximate capacity of the facility is currently
3.0 MGD (millions of gallons per day).
The first Beardsley Road Facility was constructed in 1986 with a
capacity of 0.3 MGD. This facility was removed from service and a newly constructed
facility was placed into service November 23rd 1998. The new facility produces
a safe, high quality effluent (the fully treated water) used to replenish our shrinking
groundwater supplies. Pollutants and nutrients such as ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are
biologically removed. All effluent is disinfected using ultra-violet light sources. This
procedure eliminates the need for toxic chemicals such as liquid chlorine.
Peoria looked to the future when building the Beardsley Facility.
Careful planning and design will allow greatly increased capacity from the existing
facility without needing to build a new plant. In addition, the facility was provided with
state of the art odor control systems to ensure Peoria is a good neighbor.
The purified effluent is pumped to special recharge basins where it
percolates into the ground, recharging our underground aquifers. Our City receives
recharge credits for all effluent recharged into the aquifer.
The remaining City of Peoria wastewater flows to the City of Tolleson,
Arizona treatment plant. Our City owns approximately 13 MGD capacity at that facility.
This has proven to be a cost effective means to treat our wastewater at this time.
