" Island Summer"
STEP Out
Information
This general
information has been assembled so that participants and parents have a
clear understanding of the STEP Out program and what it’s about.
Program runs for 8 weeks at the start of each summer.
Drop In Program
STEP Out is a drop-in recreation program. Participants are required to
time themselves in upon arrival and time themselves out when they
depart. Registered participants that arrive via shuttle bus should
depart by shuttle at the end of the program day; no participant that
rides the shuttle should depart the site walking unless site staff is
notified. Once signed out, a participant must immediately leave the
school campus, and those signed out are not permitted to return on the
same day. Parents may check with site staff regarding special
leave/return situations. It’s important that parents give participants
a clear message regarding permission to leave the site prior to the
end of a day’s program; again, this is a drop-in program.
Program Sites
This summer the STEP Out program will be housed on four high school
campuses: The program at Peoria High School will host participants
coming from Cheyenne,
Ira Murphy, Santa Fe, Country Meadows, Sun Valley, Cotton Boll and
Alta Loma. The program at Centennial High
School will meet in the multipurpose room and gym and will host
participants from Oakwood,
Sundance, Peoria Elementary,
Oasis, Paseo Verde, Sky View and Desert Harbor. The program at Sunrise Mountain High School, which meets in
the cafeteria and gym, will host participants from Apache,
Coyote Hills, and Frontier. The program at Liberty High School,
which meets in the cafeteria and gym,
will host students from Zuni
Hills, Parkridge, and Vistancia. Program
registration is done by site; participants are not permitted to attend
the program at a site other than the one they are registered for.
Every participant on site MUST be registered; there is no such thing
as a “guest / visitor pass.”
Transportation
All transportation offered as a part of the STEP Out program uses
PUSD busses. Participants who are utilizing the bus
shuttles must arrive at their respective pick-up sites no later than
7:45am. Bus shuttles pick up at the elementary sites between
7:45-8:00am, and depart the STEP Out sites around 2pm each day and are
scheduled to return to the pick up sites by 2:30pm each program day.
During the course of the program many field trips are offered.
Transportation is a part of these outings. In all instances, riding
the bus is a privilege, not a right. All rules and policies that are
in place for the school year are enforced for the summer as well.
Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated and violators will be
excused from bus privileges.
Snacks and Lunch Deals
A traveling snack truck, run by City recreation staff, will visit
each STEP Out each day, in the morning or in the afternoon. The
snack truck will have for sale soda pop, water, candy, cookies, and
crackers. Snack items are priced 25 cents to $1. A full packaged meal from
a variety of vendors will
be served on a rotating schedule so that a full lunch is available for
purchase each day. Participants bringing a lunch from home should note that no
refrigerator or microwave is available for perishable foods.
Field Trips
Field Trips are scheduled to many valley attractions that are
popular with 6 – 8th graders. Please see the Field Trip Information
handout for details on upcoming trips, (available soon). The cost of field trips includes general
admission, transportation, and supervision. In most cases snacks,
arcade games, etc. are not included in the cost of the field trip. WERX trip packages are available for
for Friday fieldtrips. Individual fees for field trips are payable ONLY at the
program site, and they must be paid in full prior to trip departure.
Correct change is requested if paying in cash. If payment is made with
a check, please make checks payable to the City of Peoria. Please
refer to the Field Trip Information handout for details when a special
permission slip is required for a particular outing.

Movies
One of the more popular activities that kids look forward to each
summer as a part of STEP Out is the weekly movie. Each site will offer
a trip to a local theater once each week to see a new release movie.
While the staff is careful to select features that are generally
appropriate for young teens, some of the movies will be rated PG-13.
During the first week of STEP Out participants will be given a
“PG-13
Movie Release” that can be signed and returned.
Weekly Schedule
By Friday of each week an Activity Schedule will be available at each
site for the following week; by Monday morning the schedule will be
available online at www.peoriaaz.gov/teenteam. The schedule will note
on-site special activities, reminders of things to bring to the
program, and trips/outings. Please be sure to pick up an Activity
Schedule at the program site or check online so that families may plan
for the next week.
Program Fees
The program cost is $50 for
Peoria Residents and $90 for Non-Residents. This price does not
include trips, such as movies, swimming, bowling or Friday trips. A
summer STEP-Out swim pass is available for $5 and covers
participants for the entire summer. Please note that swim passes are
not available at Liberty High School. Individual swim trips will be
available for $1 due on scheduled swim days. Summer STEP-Out movie
passes are available for $40 for the summer. Individual movie passes
are available each week for $7. Friday trip WERX packages are
available, see price and schedule information above.
