The Patrol Services Bureau includes uniform patrol. These officers are assigned to one of four shifts and are primary responders to calls for services. The Patrol Services Bureau is the backbone of the Department and comprises the majority of all sworn personnel. Some of the functions assigned to Patrol Services include the investigation of criminal offenses, the investigation and reduction of traffic accidents and patrolling for crime prevention. This Bureau includes the Department's Traffic Services Section or Motorcycle Officers, Bicycle Patrol Squad, Walking Beats, and the Police Service Dog. 


The Neighborhood Action Team (N.A.T.) was formed in September 1999. It is a dynamic team consisting of one sergeant, three officers, and two police assistants assigned to animal control.  This team takes an innovative and aggressive aproach to deal with crime, fear of crime, and quality of life issues that vex communities in the City of Peoria.Photo of a police officer and his bicyle Working in partership with the community, businesses, and other governmental entities, this team focuses on eliminating concerns of the citizens by initiating Community Oriented Policing Projects. NAT develops a systematic and comprehensive plan to deal with particular issues. High crime area intensive patrol, traffic enforcemnt, public relations, and high profile crime scene security are only some of the rolls played by NAT. As an Internationally Accredited Agency, The Peoria Police Department is committed to providing the comunities the best possible proactive response to concerns, and NAT is a direct result of that commitment.


City of Peoria, Arizona Traffic Unit

The Traffic Services Section of the Peoria Police Department consists of one sergeant and seven officers. This Section is responsible for various traffic functions including; the investigation of serious and fatal traffic collisions, responding to all traffic complaints, DUI investigations/enforcement, commercial vehicle inspections, and traffic collision analysis.

The Traffic Services Section participates in quarterly in-service training at their motor course track at the Peoria Sports Complex. The section also expanded it’s enforcement to high collision areas and school zones where each officer assigned to the Section is required to spend a designated amount of time as part of their monthly objectives.

During 2000, the officers assigned to the Traffic Services Section spent 4090  hours in responding to traffic enforcement request, in school zone enforcement, and in collision reduction areas of the city writing over 11,000 citations during that time. The Traffic Services Section continued to participate in the Westside DUI Task Forces during high profile holidays.

The Department’s Commercial Vehicle Safety Specialist completed 108 inspections. Fifty one moving violation citations were issued and 24 non-moving violations were observed. During the inspection of commercial vehicles in our city, 323 hazardous violations were detected.

The Special Assignment Unit (SAU) , which was originally formed in July 1996 as the High Risk Control Team (HRCT), is a well managed team that responds to critical incident. The response of this unit usually results in a safe, successful resolution of those incidents with minimum injury to citizens, officer or suspects.

All members assigned to t he SAU are devoted to the prevention of loss of life, the protection of the citizens they serve and the officers they support through the use of sound planning, deployment, training and operational professionalism. The team and its commander have rigid training standards to ensure optimum efficiency. The SAU members are proficient on lethal and less than lethal weapons to allow a variety of resources when responding to a critical situation.

Team members have attended several tactical training schools and have all become certified AZPOST instructors. Several of the SAU members are also factory certified instructions in chemical munitions, less lethal munitions, and in other equipment used by SAU.


Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) The purpose of the Department Crisis Negotiation Team is to provide specially trained negotiators who are able to talk to barricaded, suicidal, or hostage taking subjects and bring these high risk operations to a peaceful conclusion.

  The Police Service Dog Unit consists on one German Shepherd named Caesar and an assigned officer. The Police Service Dog Unit has been very beneficial to the Peoria Police Department, the community, and other agencies surrounding Peoria. Due to Caesar's training and natural abilities, he is able to locate people and narcotics much faster than his human counterpart. Officers of the Peoria Police Department take pride in the Police Service Dog Unit and have come to rely on this unit as a valuable team to assist with various duties when called upon.

 

Some Interesting Facts about Caesar:

  • Caesar is a German Shepherd born in Europe

  • He weighs about 85 pounds.

  • Both Caesar and his trainer had to complete 240 hours of training in order to be able to work on the street.

  • Caesar is used for locating hidden suspects, by searching in buildings, yards or open areas where a suspect may hide.

  • He is also used for locating drugs. He is able to detect the odors of Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroin and Meth.

Ride Along Program

The Citizen's Ride-Along Program provides citizens with an insight into Police activities and functions by riding with a uniformed patrol officer, during a normal shift, under controlled conditions. Individuals interested in participating in the Citizen's Ride-Along Program must complete a Citizen Observer Waiver Form and submit it to the Police Department at Attn: Staff Services, 8343 West Monroe Street, Peoria, AZ 85345.
