Holocaust Survivor Tells His Story
Diversity Speaker to Offer Firsthand Account of Nazi Terror
10/27/2009
Holocaust survivor Bernard Scheer will be the next presenter in Peoria’s Diversity Committee Speakers Series, addressing city employees and the public on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 9 a.m. in the City Council Chamber. Scheer was living in Podhace, Poland, when German soldiers invaded. Nazi SS troops executed people in the streets, burned down synagogues, destroyed cemeteries and restricted food and water for the remaining residents. Scheer and his family were shipped to Auschwitz, where 12 of Scheer’s family members were killed, including his parents and brother. Scheer escaped and hid in a nearby forest, where he lived until he was liberated by the U.S. Army. In his Peoria lecture, Scheer will recount true stories of the great suffering, remarkable determination and acts of heroism he witnessed during World War II.
