Native Plants Find New Home in Peoria
Road Project Benefits From Relocation of Mature Vegetation
8/26/2009
PEORIA, Ariz. (Aug. 26, 2009) – Peoria has partnered with APS to find a new home for hundreds of mature native
plants. The Happy Valley Road project, which extends the road from 83rd Avenue
to Lake Pleasant Parkway, will be the beneficiary of relocated mature native
plant material for the landscaping portion of the project.
The city includes the cost of small plant
material in all of its road projects. “The ability to plant larger, more mature
greenery was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up,” said City Manager Carl
Swenson.
APS donated the material as part of its program
to find homes for native plants that are affected by the Morgan-to-Pinnacle Peak
Transmission line project. In all, APS donated 20 saguaros and more than 100
mature trees to the Happy Valley Road landscaping project. Another 31 trees were
donated to the Arizona Department of Transportation for the Loop 303 project; an
additional nine saguaros found a home at the Peoria Sports Complex.
Once the vegetation was donated, the
city’s only cost was for the transportation and planting of the material. For
