(Peoria,
Ariz.) Feb. 23, 2007– Starting Saturday, March 3, archaeologists will be digging
for buried history around the Peoria Women’s Club. And the public invited to
participate.
The eight-day dig is part of March’s National Archaeology Month, and the city is
“hoping to get the public involved in actually digging in the dirt,” explains
Peoria Arizona Historical Society’s Development Director Harold McKisson. So
much so, that Peoria’s city council proclaimed March 3, 2007 Peoria
Archaeological Week at its Feb. 20 meeting.
The Women’s Club, built in 1919, is being relocated this summer to make room for
a park plaza to complement the new Peoria Center for the Performing Arts.
Historical society members approached city staff with a proposal to coordinate
an archaeological dig to get the community involved with Peoria’s history.
Residents of Peoria, both present and former, are encouraged to come, bring
pertinent souvenirs, and share oral histories of the city’s Oldtown with members
of the historical society.
The dig will begin at 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. everyday from March 3 to March 11, at
8300 W. Washington St. Admission is free. Members of the pubic interested in
participating or scheduling group tours can sign up by calling McKisson or Hal
Bander at 623-487-8030. Of course, all items founds will be moved into the
society’s museum for display.
