Preparation Begins to Release Burrowing Owls
Peoria Site Will Be Home to Owl Tents
2/26/2007
(Peoria,
Ariz.) Feb. 21, 2007 – On Saturday, Wild At Heart volunteers will begin
constructing the first two release tents for holding burrowing owls at a New
River site near 99th and Olive avenues. Each tent will house owls for 30 days,
with volunteers bringing them food. On Sunday, two more tents will be
constructed at the same site. About 50 owls will eventually be released at the
site when the tents come down and they are free to find a home at any one of the
96 artificial burrows that have been installed on Maricopa County Flood Control
District property next to the New River site. The burrow materials are being
paid for by a grant from the Arizona Bird Conservation Initiative through the
Arizona Game and Fish Department; the property is being provided by the Flood
Control District of Maricopa County; and the excavation and backfill of the
trenches for the burrows is provided by the city of Peoria.
