Peoria, Ariz. (April 29, 2008) – On May 6, the Peoria City Council is expected to appoint Carl Swenson, currently serving as one of the city’s three deputy city managers, to be the new city manager.
“It is an honor and privilege to be considered for the position,” said Swenson.
If appointed, Swenson’s immediate goal would be to work with current City Manager Terry Ellis to ensure a seamless transition. Moving forward, Swenson sees focused economic development, balancing growth with historic and environmental preservation, and assuring continued financial strength as top priorities.
Swenson joined the City of Peoria in April 2006 as a deputy city manager overseeing development and community services. He has more than 25 years of municipal government management experience, including 10 years as village manager for Oak Park, Ill., a city with a population of 52,000 adjacent to Chicago.
“Carl Swenson not only has a strong professional background, he also has the demeanor and the personality to lead the city,” said Mayor Bob Barrett. “He understands the priorities of the Mayor and City Council, and he understands this city and what we need to be successful in the future.”
The city manager is appointed by, and serves at the pleasure of, Peoria’s City Council. The manager is the city’s chief executive officer, responsible for overseeing city operations and implementing the policies of the City Council.
The current city manager, Ellis, is set to retire on June 30 following 11 years of service with Peoria. Swenson will take over the post on July 1 at a salary of $184,500.
