City Council Takes Action on Abandoned Shopping Carts

The City Council on Oct. 16 approved an ordinance dealing with stray shopping carts. Peoria acted in conjunction with state law, which holds retailers responsible for wayward carts. A new technician in the city’s Code Compliance Office will round up abandoned carts for impound. Retailers must retrieve them within three days to avoid a fine. After three days, they will pay $30 plus an additional $5 per day.
