The city of Peoria is reminding residents about the importance of shopping
"Peoria First" during the holiday season. When residents buy local, the sales
tax generated by purchasing goods in the city helps pay for things residents
depend on, like police officers, fire fighters, parks, libraries, recreation
programs and street maintenance.
Through the annual Peoria First campaign, residents are reminded that every tax
dollar generated within the city goes to pay for things Peoria residents rely
on. Nearly 56 cents from every retail tax dollar Peoria receives pays for
general government services, such as police patrol, fire response, parks,
libraries, and recreation and neighborhood programs. Approximately 27 cents from
every retail tax dollar Peoria receives goes to a dedicated fund used to finance
things like street maintenance, economic development, and city buildings. In
addition, nearly 17 cents from every retail tax dollar Peoria receives goes
toward the construction and maintenance of streets and traffic signals and for
public transportation.
Peoria's retail sales tax is lower than many other Valley cities at 1.8 percent.
If shopping in neighboring cities, the sales taxes paid benefit that city, not
Peoria. When buying holiday gifts, a new car, or just having lunch, every dollar
spent locally benefits the city and its residents. For more information about
the Peoria First campaign, look for restaurants and businesses with the Peoria
First symbol, or go to www.shoppeoriaazfirst.com.
