Construction Begins on New Peoria Community Park
Ground breaking Ceremony on Thursday, June 14
6/11/2012
PEORIA, Ariz. (June 11, 2012) – The city of Peoria
will hold a special ground breaking ceremony for the start of construction on
Pioneer Community Park on Thursday, June 14 beginning at 9:00 a.m. The ceremony
will be held on the corner of 83rd Avenue and Butler Avenue.
The new park will be constructed on an eighty acre site located along 83rd
Avenue, south of Olive Avenue at a cost of approximately $20 million with a
completion date in the fall of 2013.
The new park will have six new lighted dual-use baseball/softball fields with
shaded spectator seating and four lighted soccer fields, all capable of
accommodating tournament play to help generate revenue needed to fund the park’s
operating costs. A five acre urban fishing lake with catch and keep fishing will
be supplied by reclaimed water from the adjacent Butler Water Treatment
facility. The lake is part of the urban fishing program managed by Arizona Fish
and Game Division who will be stocking the lake. In addition, the lake will
serve as the reservoir for the park’s daily landscape irrigation needs.
Other amenities include a large ramada area, dispersed small ramadas, two
children’s playground areas, and a shaded splash pad. Concrete walk paths, a
multi-cell dog park, and large turf areas for informal recreation will all be
illuminated for evening use. Parking will be dispersed throughout the park for
efficient ingress, egress, and access to the park amenities. The former
Robertson residence parcel located near Olive Avenue will be the new home to a
rose garden / event space that will feature Old-Town themed vine covered trellis
structures, lighting, and a brick paved plaza.
Pioneer Community Park is the sixth Peoria park or trail to either begin
construction or be completed since August 2011. Palo Verde Park was completed in
August 2011. Peoria's New River Trail had an additional 3.5 miles of bike trails
added in September, 2011. Westland Park was completed in November and Osuna Park
on Old Town Peoria was dedicated in December 2011. Centennial Plaza, located on
the City Hall campus was completed for the city's recognition of the state's
Centennial festivities on February 4, 2012. Scotland Yard Park construction was
started in late 2010 and is expected to be completed this summer.
Haydon Building Corporation was awarded the contract to construct Pioneer
Community Park in 2008. EPG Environmental Planning Group will design the
extensive landscaping for the park.
