Peoria,
Ariz. (May 15, 2007) – There are over 120 citizen volunteers who devote
countless hours to serving Peoria on the city’s boards and commissions. The
Peoria City Council honored these citizens and their service at the annual
Boards and Commissions Recognition Event held Monday, May 7 at the Arizona
Broadway Dinner Theatre in Peoria.
“Today’s celebration is for you,” Councilmember
Cathy Carlat, who chairs the City Council’s Subcommittee on Boards and
Commissions, told the volunteers in the audience. “The jobs that you do are not
always easy or convenient but you do them with pride – you make a difference.”
Mayor Bob Barrett and Councilmember Carlat
recognized individuals whose service on city boards or commissions was ending.
Those honored included Cheryl Compton who served on the Library Board, and Alex
Borton, Jarod Derrick, Monique Flaherty and Derek Hughes who served on the Youth
Advisory Board.
About 170 board and commission members, their
spouses and city elected officials and staff attended. Cactus High School’s Jazz
Choir provided entertainment throughout the evening.
“These volunteer boards and commission members offer
their time and talent to serve the city,” said Peoria City Clerk Mary Jo Kief.
“This is just a way to say thanks.”
Peoria’s boards and commissions serve in an advisory
capacity and provide recommendations to the Mayor and Council on specific areas
such as land use (Planning & Zoning Commission), sports programs (Parks and
Recreation Board), and public art (Peoria Arts Commission). Citizens interested
in serving may contact the City Clerk’s Office at 623-773-7340.
