PEORIA, Ariz. (Aug.
3, 2010) – Peoria has won two statewide awards from the Arizona chapter of
the American Public Works Association (APWA).
The chapter presented
Public Works-Utilities Director Bill Mattingly with its Charles Walter Nichols
Award for Environmental Excellence today at an awards luncheon during its
statewide conference in Phoenix. It also honored Peoria’s Happy Valley Road
extension as its Project of the Year in the Transportation $25 million-$75
million category.
The Nichols Award
honors originality of thought and aggressive implementation within the agency in
which the candidate is employed. Mattingly’s nomination for the environmental
award cited his commitment to move Peoria forward and set it as a leader in
sustainability programs. The nomination cites, among other things, his roles in
implementing curbside recycling, supporting sustainable building and fostering a
solar-power project to offset a portion of the power used by the Beardsley Water
Reclamation Facility Administration Building.
Mattingly, who has
overseen Peoria’s Public Works since 2006 and Utilities since 2009, passed
credit along to his staff.
“This was a team
effort,” Mattingly said. “The reality is that this award represents a lot of
work by a lot of people on a lot of projects. While I’m honored to be the leader
of that group, the credit really goes to all of those folks.”
Nonetheless, said City
Manager Carl Swenson, “Bill’s leadership exemplifies Peoria’s commitment to
incorporate sustainable practices into everyday operations.”
The $36 million Happy
Valley Road project extended the arterial roadway from 83rd Avenue west to Lake
Pleasant Parkway. This final segment completed Happy Valley Road all the way
from I-17 to the Loop 303. It opened to traffic in November 2009.
