All Three City Unions Agree to Labor Contracts
Union Members, City Focus on Residents and Budget

PEORIA, Ariz. (May 5, 2010) – At Tuesday night’s
City Council meeting, Peoria councilmembers agreed to three labor union
contracts that were recently negotiated by city staff and union leaders.
In those contracts, the Peoria Police Officers
Association, the Peoria Firefighters Association, and the American Federation of
State, County and Municipal Employees all agreed to no salary increases for the
upcoming fiscal year.
“The success of this process is a direct result
of the collaboration and genuine interest on both sides to negotiate contracts
that provide the best service to our residents while noting the reality of the
current budget shortfalls,” said Human Resources Director Wynette Reed. For
fiscal year 2011, the city of Peoria was anticipating a $7.5 million deficit.
“The city would not have been able to shrink the deficit without employees
agreeing to no pay increases in FY2011.”
During the negotiations, the parties focused on
three areas of interest: retaining core resident services; the financial
viability of the city; and minimal impact to the current workforce.
