Peoria Improves School Zone Safety Along Happy Valley Road
Message Boards Installed as Visual Reminders for Motorists to Slow Down

PEORIA, Ariz. (Feb. 23, 2010) - The city of Peoria is reminding motorists of the reduced speed limit near elementary schools by installing solar-powered “VCalm” message signs on Happy Valley Road. The two speed radar feedback signs have been installed near Terramar Elementary and Happy Valley Basic schools west of 67th Avenue.

“The message boards detect vehicle speed. If the vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit, the board will flash the speed to inform motorist they need to slow down,” says Sergeant Russ Scarborough, the Peoria Police Department’s traffic-services supervisor.

Similar signs are in use on Bell Road and on 91st Avenue near Desert Harbor Elementary. The signs were budgeted as a component of the recently completed Happy Valley Road improvement project. They cost approximately $28,000.

“The ‘VCalm’ signs are a part of the total package of safety improvements that include the signal at the shared driveway between Terramar Elementary and Christ’s Church of the Valley; additional signing; and the school stencil in the travel lanes,” according to Senior Civil Engineer Chris Kmetty.
