Peoria Uses Grant to Purchase 'Green' Street Sweeper
Equipment Will Play Major Role in Air and Storm Water Quality
1/28/2010
PEORIA, Ariz. (Jan. 28, 2010) - The city of
Peoria recently purchased a street sweeper with the latest emissions technology
using funds awarded by the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG). The grant
covers more than 95 percent of the $233,424 cost.
“This is another step in Peoria’s continuing progress toward improving our
environment, supporting sustainable practices and utilizing grant dollars to
stretch our resources,” said Deputy City Manager Susan Thorpe. “We are happy to
be making these strides for the community.”
Studies have shown that particulate matter which is 10 micrometers (PM10) in
size -- about the diameter of a human hair -- can be inhaled and cause health
problems. One of the most practical solutions to reducing PM10 is to sweep
streets and remove debris before it gets kicked up into the air.
The city also has learned that another MAG grant application was awarded and
plans to purchase a second sweeper with this latest emissions technology.
