Peoria, Ariz. (October 5, 1998) – The City of Peoria received two Awards of Merit for Environmental Excellence from the Valley Forward Association recently. Peoria’s Design Review Manual was recognized in the Large Scale and Community Development category, and restoration of Peoria’s Central School was recognized in the Historic Preservation Category. Peoria’s Design Review Manual was recognized for promoting integration and preservation of the natural environment while recognizing the economic and time restraints that face commercial and residential developers. The Design Review Manual strives to ensure compatibility of development and the existing environment by providing architectural, site, and landscape guidelines in both a qualitative and quantitative manner. The restoration of Peoria’s Central School, now home to the Peoria Historical Society, was recognized as the cornerstone of Peoria’s effort to preserve its heritage. First constructed in 1905, the Central School was built with funds generated by the first school bonds issued by the Peoria Unified School District. Restoration of the building with focus on its original "Southwestern Revival" architectural style was made all the more important to Peoria given the fact that many of Peoria’s businessmen and community leaders were educated in the two-room schoolhouse. Many of these individuals also assisted in raising funds for the project. The Valley Forward Environmental Excellence Awards began in 1980 as a way to recognize outstanding contributions to the physical environment of Valley communities. Areas recognized include innovative technologies, environmental education, and achievements in public media and artistic endeavors.
