GENERAL
PURPOSE
Perform
advanced professional traffic engineering work in various
areas including traffic signals, traffic safety, and
neighborhood traffic management; and perform a variety of
technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.
SUPERVISION
RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive
direction from the City Traffic Engineer or designated
management staff. Supervises work of Transportation Planning
Engineers.
ESSENTIAL
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The duties
listed below are intended only as illustrations of the
various types of work that may be performed. The omission of

Recommend and assist in the implementation of
goals and objectives.
·
Study traffic engineering problems and
develop plans for improvements.
·
Observe markings and other traffic control
devices and design plans for safe control and flow of
traffic.
·
Survey traffic conditions, volume analyses,
accident analyses and parking studies, and draft reports
relative to findings.
·
Give professional public presentations,
including preparing the presentations and reports.
·
Supervise the Neighborhood Traffic Management
Program (Traffic Calming).
·
Attend and present at City Council meetings,
and coordinate board meetings and public neighborhood
meetings.
·
Participate and coordinate long-range
transportation planning activities, bicycle and pedestrian
planning issues, and school transportation issues.
· Respond
to complaints from the public, confer with department and
division heads in regard to problems; investigate complaints
and speak to
Interest groups on
traffic engineering subjects.
·
Act as departmental representative at
meetings with other departments and agencies as directed.
·
Demonstrate continuous effort to improve
operations, decrease turnaround times, and streamline work
processes.
·
Conduct field reviews of work programs,
review projects for conformance to established plans,
specifications and goals.
· Coordinate
section activities with other departments, divisions, and
outside agencies, coordinate crew activities with private
contractors on
specialized jobs.
·
Resolve work problems and interpret
administrative policies to subordinates, other departments,
consultants, contractors, architects, planners and
the public.
·
Serve as technical advisor on traffic
engineering related matters and provide technical
information and advice to other City departments, divisions
and
outside agencies.
·
Perform related duties, as assigned.
·
Interpret and apply federal, state and local
policies, laws and regulations.
·
Supervise the work of Transportation Planning
Engineers.
REQUIRED
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's
degree from an accredited college or university with major
course work in civil or traffic engineering or related field
and three years of professional and technical traffic
engineering experience.
Possession of a Certificate of
Registration as a professional civil engineer in the State
of Arizona. An Arizona Drivers license and ability to
maintain insurability under the City Vehicle Insurance
Program.
DESIRED
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience
interacting with the public, elected officials, private
consultants and other government agency staff. Extensive
knowledge of traffic engineering and transportation planning
principles; techniques of management and supervision,
including goals and objectives development and work planning
organization; principles and practices of contract
administration and project management; budget development
and administration; grant funding application and
administration.

Physical Demands:
Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and the use
of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces

problems; interact with the general public, contractors,
