Council Highlights


July

• Awarded a contract of approximately $275,000 to Haydon Building Corp. for pre-construction master planning services for Community Park #2 to be located at the southeast corner of 83rd and Olive avenues.

• Awarded a $125,000 contract to Pacific Mutual Consultants to prepare an update to the Central Peoria Revitalization Plan, a 10-year planning framework for Oldtown Peoria and surrounding neighborhoods.

• Authorized spending to put two additional traffic signals on Lake Pleasant Parkway, at the intersections with 95th Avenue and Jomax Road.

• Approved an agreement with Surprise, Maricopa County and the Arizona Rock Products Association under which Peoria will contribute $25,000 toward a joint study to identify possible truck routes that could service mining operations in the Agua Fria riverbed while minimizing the impact on city streets.

August

• Adopted a resolution allowing the Police Department to accept two victim-assistance grants from the state, one for $12,000 and the other for more than $41,000. With the grants, the city can continue to employ a full-time victim advocate to offer victims crisis intervention, support and referrals.

• Authorized more than $300,000 for the Fire Department to replace its cardiac monitors with a newer, more-effective model.

• Adopted new Design Principles and Guidelines, a comprehensive revision to the existing design standards relating to architecture, site design and thematic elements.

• Authorized an agreement with the cities of Glendale and El Mirage and Maricopa County for improvements to Northern Parkway from Grand Avenue west to Loop 303.

• Authorized an agreement with Glendale and the state for design and construction of Phase II of the Beardsley Connector and the Union Hills traffic interchange widening.

• Approved legal action against Maricopa County, either alone or in concert with other cities, to force the county to comply with state laws that effectively create a buffer around Luke Air Force base and its auxiliary sites.

September

• Authorized assignment of a Peoria police officer to the state Gang and Immigration Intelligence Team Enforcement Mission Task Force for a year.

• Authorized an agreement with the Maricopa County Housing Authority to manage public housing and Section 8 vouchers on behalf of the Peoria Housing Authority, replacing a private contractor that has announced it will stop providing those services by the end of the year.

• Awarded a $275,000 contract to Project Design Consultants to study ways the city could update its approach to development around the Peoria Sports Complex.

• Confirmed the appointment of Susan Daluddung to be one of the city’s three deputy city managers. Daluddung has more than 24 years of city planning experience and has been community and economic development director for the City of Hayward, Calif., for the last two years.
