New Business: 3R Celebration of Artists There was discussion regarding the 2008 Celebration of Artists Exhibit among the commissioners. Commissioner Wordsman indicated that receiving the artwork went smoothly but suggested having another person available to assist. It was also noted that the adhesive dots that are used to label the artwork should not be placed directly on the canvas. It was also noted that some unframed artwork was accepted this year into the show unnoticed. Mr. Miller did state however that no giclees were accepted unknowingly this year. There were a few glitches regarding payment of entry fees, however overall it was a great success. It was suggested that next year a pre-registration table be set up to verify all information before artists can continue with check in. There was further discussion regarding the art reception which everyone agreed was a success. Commissioners made the following suggestions: * Calling winners the day before the reception so they we aware they won a cash prize and could be there when it was announced * Mr. Miller indicated his preference of having the reception on a Saturday night next year * Having the exhibit and reception at the Rio Vista Recreation Center * Having the exhibit and reception at the Peoria Center for the Performing Arts Mr. Miller discussed the change in media categories, specifically including watercolor, oil and acrylic in one category, stating it was a positive change. 4R Arts Master Plan Mr. Miller informed the commission that five firms submitted bids for the Arts Master Plan. A panel reviewed all the plans separately. The bids will be presented at the first council meeting in May. 5R Arts Grants Mr. Miller stated that the deadline for submitting the grants has been extended to April 30, 2008. 6R One Artist Exhibit Mr. Miller suggested that only ribbon winners from the 2008 Celebration of Artists be considered for the One Artist Exhibits this year. Commissioner Wordsman made a motion to invite 2008 Celebration of Artists ribbon winners for the One Artist Exhibits this year, Commissioner Brown seconded the motion which passed unanimously. 7R New Art Projects Mr. Miller discussed the possibility of a mural in Downtown Peoria. Mr. Miller indicated he would extend the offer for this project to Emanuel Martinez, the sculptor who did the Peoria Pioneer Memorial and possibly include the assistance of high school students. Commissioner Buonagurio and Chair Ballance suggested a tile mosaic or bas relief be considered in lieu of a mural. Although they would consider a mural if it tied in with the history of Peoria and the style of downtown. Commissioner Buonagurio made a motion to further consider a mural in downtown Peoria, Commissioner Flanigan seconded the motion which passed unanimously. Mr. Miller suggested that the commissioners consider smaller art projects in the downtown area of Peoria which would require a call to artists. There was discussion regarding placing art in the Osuna Park area when the Women’s Club was relocated. Commissioner Flanigan made a motion to pursue a call to artists for artwork in Downtown Peoria, Commissioner Crooks seconded the motion which passed unanimously. CALL TO THE PUBLIC: A speaker request form was submitted by the president of the Peoria Fine Arts Association, Janet Wandrey, who attended the commission meeting.
